Most of us are divided into four big groups of personalities at work. In this episode, we are going to explore the four groups to help you understand more about business communication and where you best fit.

Are you curious about your colour and what personality traits you have in business communication?

If it is still a mystery to you, I would like to share why it's important:
  1. Find out your colour so that you become more aware of yourself
  2. Double down on your strengths and also be mindful of how to overcome your weaknesses
  3. Great leaders inspire by telling great stories. So, bring out the best in your personality trait to inspire your team.

I remembered experiencing a very one-sided meeting when I was starting out in my first business.

I could hear a pin drop while one of the directors was chairing the meeting.

One would assume that everyone would be on full alert, ready to contribute to the meeting when being questioned.

However, it was far from what I had imagined it to be. Most of the team managers were browsing their phones or daydreaming with little to contribute.

What I had experienced was a leader who lost the attention of his peers, and he was oblivious to it.

Not because they did not respect him, but because he did not get his agenda for the meeting on point.

Most of the conversations were disconnected with irrelevant talking points seemingly pulled out of thin air that was out of context.

As a result, most of the attendees rather not confront the director and let him speak out of fear that they might get challenged.

After learning more about business communication, I realised that this particular leader has a green personality.

What does it mean?

In the next section, I will give you an overview of the four personalities in business communication which is Green, Red, Blue and Purple based on Colored BrainTM.

Part A: Communication

  • Green: A Green personality throws out ideas rapidly that may or may not be connected, sometimes they seem to be random.
  • Red: A Red personality ensures that their message is clear by being able to detach themselves from thinking objectively
  • Blue: A Blue personality is versatile with the people they meet and adapts well to social situations with emotional intelligence
  • Purple: A purple personality relies on communication with tangible proof to back their ideas

Part B: Leadership

  • Green: A Green personality places emphasis on taking fast action with a lot of experimentation hoping to find a solution
  • Red: A Red personality leads by formulating calculated long-term strategies to ensure a clear sense of direction.
  • Blue: A Blue personality is caring and sharing because they are sensitive to the needs of others around them.
  • Purple: A purple leader uses data and planning to influence their leadership decisions. Information is king.

Part C: Work

  • Green: A Green personality does not necessarily need a proper plan of execution. They prefer to be spontaneous.
  • Red: A Red personality evaluates situations with caution and thorough analysis to minimise the risk of execution
  • Blue: A Blue personality is a great team player and relies on strength in numbers by fostering collaborative work.
  • Purple: A purple leader is meticulous with details, organisation and operational discipline to maximise efficiency.

Part D: Meeting / DIscussion

  • Green: A Green personality is good at getting things started with a broad perspective, but rely on others to follow through.
  • Red: A Red personality irons out the needs of a situation with logical facts before assigning actions to follow up
  • Blue: A Blue personality is great at using intuition to share ideas and diffuse situations to yield positive outcomes.
  • Purple: A Purple personality relies on a lot of data processing, studying and listening before making practical decisions.

Your success in business communication depends on your ability to develop your key strengths and weaknesses.

Out of the four categories, which personality colour do you think you gravitate to?

Think about how you can increase your productivity at work.

For example, if you know you are Blue being the people person and you are being offered a job either in the client servicing team or the technical team, it's best to choose client servicing.

Or if you are Green, consider making mental notes to touch on key ideas that connect to the bigger picture you are trying to pitch.

If you are Purple like me, maybe work on key summaries when presenting to clients and leave out secondary information to keep things concise.
